Hobbyist Level: A specialized fish, primarily found in brackish
mangrove estuaries, but also penetrates rivers and small streams.
needs to have a minimum of 1 tablespoon salt per 5 gallons of water (fresh
water conditions)- up to 1 tablespoon salt per gallon water (brackish water
conditions).
How Many? Can be kept as singles
or in groups
Housing: (Temperature- 75-85), (pH 7.4-8.2)
Tank mates: In fresh
water systems mixes with gouramis, barbs, sharks, cats, swords, peaceful
cichlids, in brackish water systems mixes with monodactylus, scats,
puffers, datanoids, gobies.
Feeding: Feed standard
foods with an occasional live worm, live brine shrimp.
Feeds at the surface during daytime on floating debris which includes insects
and vegetable matter. It is renowned for its ability to 'shoot down' insect prey
by spitting water from its mouth with considerable force and for its remarkable
accuracy; shooting range is up to 60 inches! Can be trained to knock food
off of the glass walls if the water level is kept several inches from the top.

Natural Habitat: Asia and Oceania: India
eastward to the Philippines, and south to Indonesia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands,
Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia.
