Blind Cave Tetra
Astanax mexicanus
An interesting fish also known as the
Mexican Tetra. The "blind cave" version of this fish is a cave
dwelling species that has evolved to have no eyes. The eyes have skin
grown over them to protect them from being damaged in the dark confines of
caves. The fish use their lateral line to sense what is around them
and find their way around in caves.
Grows to: 4.5"
Hobbyist Level: Not recommended for
beginners.
How Many? They are a schooling
fish that should be be purchased in groups of 4 or more. Six or more
is best.
Housing: Provide plenty of swimming room
as well as some bushy plants for hiding. They look good with a dark
substrate. They swim in the middle region of the tank.
They enjoy a healthy water current. Minimum tank size is about 30
gallons. (Temperature- 72-82), (pH 6.5-7.5)
Tank mates: They are
an active fish best mixed with other active fish such as barbs. They can
be fin nippers so avoid tank mates with long fins.
Feeding: They will
accept a variety of foods. Feed flakes, along with brine shrimp and frozen
foods. Tetras will show their best color after you have owned it for a few
months and have given them a good diet. They are an omnivore.
Natural Habitat: Lower Rio Grande River,
including Texas and Mexico. Fish
sold at Elmer's are domestically raised.
Males and Females: Females may appear more
round bodied when plump with eggs.
