Elmer's Aquarium Community Tank Suggestion Type 3
Swordtails, Mollies, Moons/Platies: A livebearer specialty tank
This community is
designed to provide best conditions for livebearers (Mollies, Moons,
Swordtails). Along with the livebearers, gouramis, small sharks, and active
tetras are good fits. Most livebears and tetras do best in groups of 3 or more.
This community offers a way to provide a lively and colorful collection of these
very popular fish.
Housing:
This community tank is suitable for tanks 10 gallons or
more with standard filtration and heating. (For filtration we recommend an
undergravel filter and an outside power filter.) Keep the temperature on the
warm side (80-82 degrees). Maintain a pH of 7.2-7.6. Check pH monthly. Maintain 2 tablespoons of salt per 5 gallons. (Livebearers prefer more salt than many
other fish.) With the proper conditions these fish will begin to breed and you
may see some young swimming among your floating plants. Isolate babies in a
small filtered aquarium and feed them several times a day for growth. We sell
several good books which further explain how to breed and raise livebearers.
Some live plants are recommended.
Feeding:
Mollies, swords and moons will only thrive if they are fed
small amounts frequently. Feed 3-4 times a day with standard foods such as flake
foods and brine shrimp. Good supplements include freeze dried krill, live brine
shrimp, vegetable based flake food, and algae tablets for your catfish. |
